John Bates for Jean Varon

Incredible and rare early piece by John Bates for his Jean Varon label. This carries the 'Pret a Porter' label which dates from his most iconic period of the mid-late 1960s, while and immediately after he was designing the costumes for Emma Peel in The Avengers. This dress is a stunner and definitely not just a 'little black dress'. The straight cut and scooped neckline are pure mid-Sixties Bates, and the addition of the fringing on the sleeves and around the hem give it an incredible movement and depth.

Measurements:

Bust 36" - Hips 36" - Length 34"

Fabric:

Moss crepe (Bates favoured a moss crepe with a smooth jersey reverse. This means that the dress didn't need lining but is opaque and comfortable to wear)

Condition:

Excellent condition. There's a run or glitch to the top crepe layer on one side of the neckline but this is barely noticeable because of the integral lining on the crepe. Sold as vintage.
