John Bates for Jean Varon

Very rare early piece by British Boutique designer John Bates, dating to around 1965/66. At this time, Bates was designing the wardrobe for Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in The Avengers. With them, he helped popularise the mini skirt and was one of the first designers to use bold op-art prints and PVC. He also used mock lacing on dresses for Emma Peel, and this zesty little beauty features them at the neck and down the sides of the skirt. The fabric is a weighty, slubby linen in a vibrant citrussy colour (it's on the border between lime green and lemon yellow I'd say, perhaps a chartreuse). These super mod early pieces by Bates, especially those so obviously from the same period as The Avengers, are getting harder and harder to find. I would say that this piece is museum quality, having been hardly worn and in lovely condition.
